Mitiukhin is an earth sciences graduate and so far held the position of director of operations for Africa of Russian diamond company Alrosa, a shareholder in SMC and one of the world’s largest diamond companies.

With this change in Sociedade Mineira da Catoca, the shareholders are complying with the company’s statutes that provide for the rotation of management positions.

SMC is a company focused on mining, exploration, recovery and sale of diamonds, and its shareholders are Angolan state company Endiama (32.8 percent) Russia’s Alrosa (32.8 percent), LLI Holdings (18 percent) and Brazilian group Odebrecht (16.4 percent).

SMC is involved in projects in the provinces of Kwanza Sul, Lunda Sul, Lunda Norte and Bié and the Catoca mine is the fourth largest open pit kimberlite in the world, with a diameter of approximately 1 kilometre, an area of 64 hectares and a depth of 120 metres. (macauhub/AO)
